Jets tried to lure Steve Smith out of retirement

Despite efforts on the Jets’ part, Steve Smith is still retired.

The former Ravens and Panthers receiver claimed the Jets tested the waters to see if he was interested in playing during the 2017 season, according to NFL Network’s Kimberly Jones.

“Earlier today in the green room, Steve Smith Sr. was saying ‘Hey, the Jets reached out to me,'” Jones said. “Yes, the Jets reached out to Steve Smith, asked if he was still interested in playing. He indicated he wasn’t.”

Had the Jets convinced Smith to come out of retirement, it would have been a shocking move. The team already cut ties with Brandon Marshall and they released longtime linebacker David Harris Tuesday and are expcted to release veteran receiver Eric Decker this week.

Newton last year did not play like the MVP-caliber quarterback who took the Panthers to Super Bowl 50, but Carolina added some new pieces in the draft with Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel. Newton has alternated good-and-bad the last four years. He’s due for another big year.

Dalton is a tough one to rank. He’s played like a borderline MVP candidate at times, but he’s also coming off a rough season in which he threw a career-low 18 TDs as part of a 6-9-1 season.
